Top performance on all fronts

30 04 2012

“All the right topics, a further rise in participation from abroad and highly satisfied exhibitors – this year’s Hannover Messe added up to a complete success,” commented Dr. Wolfram von Fritsch, Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe, at the press conference on the last day of the show.

“Hannover Messe 2012 has triggered a new wave of business for industrial enterprises. The show’s 5,000 exhibitors will now have their work cut out for them.” The Swiss exhibitors have worked well too.

Hannover Messe 2012 attracted well over 190,000 attendees. “We knew we would definitely be seeing more visitors than in 2010 – a year in which turnout was impacted by the volcanic ash cloud. But we were not at all prepared for pulling even with our figures for the boom year of 2008, as well as for a significant rise in attendance from abroad. This underscores the kind of top performance delivered by this year’s event,” von Fritsch noted.

Definitely worldwide
A total of 50,000 visitors attended the event from abroad in 2012 – a jump of over one-third compared with 2008. 20,000 of these were from outside of Europe. “We had higher visitor numbers not just from China, but also from India, Korea, Brazil and the United States,” von Fritsch reported. There were also a higher number of visitors from other European countries.

Happy Swiss companies
As you may have noticed it, I was on the Swiss both that week and I will carry on presenting the companies I’ve met there the following days. The CEO’s and sales representatives I discussed with on the booth were quite happy with results, a lot of contacts, qualitative contacts, a perfect organization on the Swiss booth… many have already decided to be part in 2013. (I personally wonder why there are not more companies from French speaking Switzerland).

2013 on the right track
Dr. von Fritsch is confident of a successful Hannover Messe 2013: “More than 600 companies have already submitted their registrations for Hannover Messe 2013. Over the past few days many of them have even inquired about the possibility of booking bigger stands next year. So next year’s event is likely to fill the entire trade fair complex in Hannover,” he concluded.

The next Hannover Messe will be staged from 8 to 12 April 2013.

16 04 2012

85% of the manufacturers in Spain are based in the Basque Country and Bilbao Exhibition Centre is its natural showcase.

Visiting BIEMH, International Machine-Tool Exhibition, will not be just attending a trade fair: scheduled to take place from May 28 to June 2, it will be the best chance to get close to Spanish companies, which are specialised in high-performance and customised machinery.

A reliable reference
26 editions of experience and an ongoing technology research and development in machine-tools make Spanish manufacturers and it’s most representative fair, BIEMH, a reliable reference in sectors such as railway industry, aerospace, automotive industry and wind energy in several countries.
In fact, 85% of the manufacturers in Spain are based in the Basque Country region, within an 80 km radius of Bilbao Exhibition Centre, where all these types of machinery will be on show at the exhibition. To complete this, visits to the production plants will be organised with the co-operation of AFM, the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Association of Spain, and SPRI, the Basque Development Agency.

Spanish and International event
Manufacturers will predominate in BIEMH:  over 60% of the exhibitors that have already signed up for it are manufacturers of machines, tools and accessories. In total, 1097 firms from 25 countries have confirmed their participation in the event.
To date, the sectors that have reserved most space are cutting machine-tools (35%), metal forming machine-tools (20%), tool companies (10%) and accessory companies (8%). The remaining sectors have also achieved significant bookings: electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, metrology, control and CAD/CAM/CAE equipment and other machinery and equipment.

The full list of exhibitors is updated weekly and can be viewed on the official website. The list is searchable by company name, country, province and sector and subsector, product and location are soon to be added as further search criteria.

De-industrialisation may wipe out Europe’s innovation capacity

23 03 2012

The European Association of the Machine Tool industries, CECIMO, launched its ‘Study on the Competitiveness of the European Machine Tool Industry’ with a roundtable meeting at the European Parliament on 21 March, which brought together industry and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Prepared by a voluntary group of industrialists coordinated by CECIMO, the study provides a comprehensive snapshot of the European machine tool industry in the post-crisis era.

Michael Hauser, Vice-President of Cecimo and CEO of Tornos.

.

The event was titled: “Made in Europe? Challenges facing the EU’s machine tool industry”. The findings of the CECIMO study reveal that the share of European machine tool production has been in decline over the last decade, owing mainly to the shift of markets to Asia. “Driven by the rise of China, Asia has become truly ‘the factory of the world’ over the past decade. Today, Asia consumes more 66% of the world’s machine tool production and China alone absorbs 50% of this. The share of European consumption in world consumption has dropped from 40% to one fifth over the last decade, the share which was obviously lost to Asia” explained Michael Hauser, Vice-President of CECIMO, CEO of Tornos S.A. to MEPs present in the meeting.

“Mission impossible”
Machine tools are the basic building blocks of the industrialisation of a country. Emerging countries increasingly invest in production systems provided largely by the European machine tool industry to build up their manufacturing base. “This is good news for our companies as their exports to China and Asia are booming. However, the bad news is that our customers relocate outside Europe and we are forced to follow them to other markets. Expanding to Asian markets is almost ‘a mission impossible’ for an SME employing a hundred people”, the CECIMO Vice-President stated.

Asian Dream at the 15th JIMH

30 08 2011

The international days of watchmaking marketing (JIMH) will address Asian markets from a Swiss manufacturer’s point of view this year. “Asian Dream” is the evocative theme of this 15th edition to take place on November 2 and 3, 2011, in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Neuchâtel. The unmistakable watchmaking rendezvous of the end of the year presented yesterday the outline of its program.

The international development of watchmaking brands place the Asian continent at the centre of attention. Talking about expanding, promising or established market, Asia is an essential component of strategies of development for industry professionals. Under the “Asian Dream” theme the 15th JIMH will offer a broad analysis with a host of international speakers.

Quick glance on the themes

  • Development of points of sales in Asian markets
  • Influence of internet on brand awareness in Asia
  • Digital media
  • Asian user and his relation with time
  • Studies by countries
  • Semiotic studies
  • Significance of time for Eastern cultures

Two days event
As usual, the event is divided into two sections covering the theme. The 15th international watchmaking marketing day itself will take place on Thursday, November 3, 2011, at the Théâtre de l’Heure Bleue in La Chaux-de-Fonds and will be preceded by its academic component (the 6th day of research in watchmaking marketing (JRMH)), on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the Arc high school of management in Neuchâtel.

Tentative programme and other information on the event can be found here www.marketinghorloger.ch

An event not to miss
Every year when Winter comes we know that an event of quality will take place in La Chaux-de-Fonds for everyone interested in watchmaking and marketing. That’s the best place to go to open our eyes and minds… I’m happy to think I’ll be there again!
You can read the article on the 14th watchmaking marketing day published in Eurotec here and the one published on the 13th here.

A New Mecca for Europe’s Key Sourcing Professionals

6 07 2011

Hosted for the first time in Spain, the Medevice Design Manufacturing Exhibition and Biomaterials Europe Conference will take place on 5-6 October 2011 at the Barcelo Sants Hotel, Barcelona. These two new events bring a much needed platform to connect medical device industry suppliers with Europeanwide medical device manufacturers.

“This event is aimed at helping Spanish medical device manufacturers meet other European colleagues in the industry, to create partnerships and develop their business, while participating in the Biomaterials Conference. By participating in the Medevice Exhibition, there is a great opportunity for Spanish companies with processes that could be used for medical device manufacturing to show them to the European medical device industry” explains Angel Lagrana from ASCAMM Technology Center, the local institution coorganising the show with UBM Canon. In his opinion for the Spanish industry, he adds, “this event, held on their doorstep, is an easier route to internalization for companies, without going abroad. It is a costeffective platform to present their capabilities to Europeanwide medical device manufacturers in order to increase the possibility to become subcontractors.”

Very high potential in Spain
The background for Medevice Design Manufacturing Exhibition and Biomaterials Europe Conference relies on a very dynamic environment in which cross‐penetration between biotechnology, biomaterials and medical device industries are accelerating new developments. This environment is evident not only on a global level but also on regional levels, in particular in Spain where the sector shows very high potential.

The Biomaterials industry’s significant contribution to the development of medical devices
Biomaterials comprise a large category of materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, glasses, carbons, and composite materials. They can be synthetic or natural, solid or liquid. Biomaterials as a field has seen steady growth over its approximately half century of existence, and uses ideas from medicine, biology, chemistry, materials science and engineering. Biological interaction of materials with their environment is getting more and more relevant in microengineering, sensor technology and power engineering applications, but also in medical engineering.

Medevice Design and Manufacturing Exhibition
The event was designed specifically with the idea of creating a direct connection between medical‐ device industry suppliers and European‐wide medical device manufacturers needing to comprehend the latest developments and techniques in applying biomaterials for medical device manufacturing. Over 70 companies will present their products/services alongside a specialised conference.

Call for paper
Technical papers, case studies, lessons learned and results will be particularly welcome in the following areas, however, other presentations will be considered:

  • Biocompatibility
  • New biomaterials and design trends
  • Functionalised surface
  • Tissue engineering
  • Advanced manufacturing for biomaterials processing (assembling, manufacturing, packaging, sterilisation, prototyping, additive manufacturing…)
